One of the truly amazing sights you see whilst travelling between Johannesburg and Cape Town is that of the Hex River Valley. You are confronted with the stark contrast of the barren mountains and the beautiful green vineyards in the valley. It is not a gradual blending in of vineyard and mountain side, but more as if a definite line has been drawn, one side of which is green and lush, the other barren.

This sight brings to mind the saying, "The grass is not greener on the other side, the grass is greener where you water it".

Granted, the Hex River Valley would probably be greener than the mountain slopes, but the fact that the land has been cultivated, irrigated and fertilised has resulted in rich, fruit bearing vineyards.

Thus it is with our lives ... if we fertilise, nourish and look after our minds, our bodies, our dreams and ambitions, many rewards will be reaped.

• Strive to learn continually; be it from books, past experiences, other people, magazines or journals.
• Reading will nourish your mind; motivational, self help and personal development books are
  high in "nutritional" value.
• The people you associate with can either be like a weed, limiting you and stunting your growth, or like a fertiliser, enhancing your growth and development.
• Turn your car into a "greenhouse" where the atmosphere is perfectly suited to rapid growth by listening to personal development tapes and CDs.

You are the farmer and what you will be, do or become is your crop. The more you fertilise, water and tend it, the greater your rewards in life will be.
