In
our industry and our business, the hardest part of our job is keeping up with
the never-ending avalanche of information coming our way and new developments
taking place. I searched around and found Ken Smith from
PolyOne's practical advice on handling this chore. It fits in well with my new
'balanced' life and I would like to share my interpretation of it with you.
| 1. | Prioritise Ruthlessly. We are all busy. So be very selective about what you want or need and what you are going to do with it. For Kevin, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is number one right now, "as it has real potential as a competitive advantage." |
| 2. | Delegate: Rely on your staff and resources to go out, research their areas of expertise, sort through the clutter and report back any developments that could affect your company, whether it is through new functionality or better cost efficiency. |
| 3. | Stay abreast in your areas of expertise. Through networking, join and attend industry committees, associations, events, Internet surfing - 'ask the experts.' You and your company cannot afford to be paralysed by waiting - it's valuable to get involved early and now. |
| 4. | Read. But what to read? |
| 5. | Use your consultants and vendors. Milk your relationships with your consultants, analysts, marketing and advertising agencies, industry suppliers and associations. They need to stay ahead in their fields, so where better to find, not only academic, but real-world information. Kevin says, "using input from them is a way of picking and choosing the very best content." |
| 6. | Time. Don't burn your limited time - it is your most precious commodity. Use it wisely! |
